A cesarean section is a form of childbirth in which a surgical incision is made through a mother’s abdomen and uterus to deliver one or more babies. The commonest uterine incision is the lower segment incision. It may be done electively or as an emergency procedure. Common indications recognizable during the antenatal period that may require cesarean section are malpresentation, antepartum hemorrhage, previous cesarean section or surgery on the uterus, bad obstetric history, IUGR, induction of labor for pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, postdates, premature rupture of membranes, fetal macrosomia, and cephalopelvic disproportion. Situations warranting neonatal intensive care management facilities need for blood and blood component therapy, special anesthesia services like epidural analgesia; For the management of postoperative complications of cesarean section like sepsis, secondary hemorrhage, wound dehiscence, acute renal failure, etc where multidisciplinary input is warranted need to be tackled at the super-specialty level.
